Study Programmes

Three Spiritual Programmes

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso has designed three special spiritual programmes for the systematic study and practice of Kadampa Buddhism that are especially suited to the modern world.

The General Programme/ Weekly Classes
Wednesday 7pm - 8.30pm with Gen Kelsang Rabten

Tuesday 7:00-8:30pm with Kelsang Lamchog

Friday 10:00-11:30am with Claire Gormly

The General Programme is a general study of Buddhist teachings and meditation. It is designed to provide us with tools for reducing our problems in daily life and a spiritual path that leads to the inner peace of Nirvana. It is open to everybody and its drop-in status gives it a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

The Foundation Programme
Sundays 4 - 6pm & 7- 9pm with Gen Kelsang Rabten

The Foundation Programme gives us the opportunity to deepen our understanding and experience of Buddha's teachings through a systematic study of six texts written by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. Through studying these texts with a qualified teacher we can definitely progress quickly along the path to liberation and enlightenment. We are currently studying the text 'Joyful Path of Good Fortune'.

The Teacher Training Programme
with Gen Kelsang Rabten

The Teacher Training Programme offers the opportunity to train as a qualified meditator and teacher of Kadampa Buddhism. This involves the study of twelve texts written by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso under the close guidance of a qualified teacher. Please enquire for more details

Why study?

There are three reasons why we need to study and practice the teachings of Buddha:

  • To develop our wisdom
  • To cultivate a good heart
  • To maintain a peaceful state of mind.

If we do not strive to develop our wisdom, we shall always remain ignorant of ultimate truth - the true nature of reality. Although we wish for happiness, our ignorance leads us to engage in non-virtuous actions, which are the main cause of all our suffering.  If we do not cultivate a good heart, our selfish motivation destroys harmony and good relationships with others. We have no peace, and no chance to gain pure happiness. Without inner peace, outer peace is impossible. If we do not maintain a peaceful state of mind we are not happy even if we have ideal conditions. On the other hand, when our mind is peaceful we are happy even if our external conditions are unpleasant. Therefore, the development of these qualities is of utmost importance for our daily happiness.
