FAQs about weekly classes
Q. Why should I attend a class?
A. Buddha’s teachings are all about developing habits that will help you attain a peaceful, positive mind all the time regardless of circumstances. The benefits of doing this are endless. You will develop skills that will help you solve any problem, your relationships will improve, and you will become happier as a result.
Q. I am practicing a different faith. Can I attend your classes?
A. Yes. Our General Program classes are designed for everyone. You will gain benefit from the teachings in these classes, regardless of whether or not you are a Buddhist. Whatever you find beneficial in the classes you can integrate into your daily life.
Q. What can I expect in a General Program class?
A. Each General Program class consists of a brief breathing meditation followed by a teaching and concluding with a contemplative meditation.
Q. What do I wear?
A. Dress is casual so you can wear whatever you like. We do ask that you remove your shoes before entering the Meditation Room, so you may want to wear shoes that can be easily removed.
Q. What if I have never meditated before?
A. Previous meditation experience is not necessary. The teacher will guide you and help you focus your mind on the object of meditation. If you choose to attend classes regularly, you will find that your meditation skills will improve over time.
Q. Do I have to sit on a meditation cushion?
A. No. Seating is generally in chairs in our General Program classes and during other special events.
Q. Do you have any rules I need to know before attending a class?
A. We have a few basic rules that help us train our mind and practice consideration for others. We ask that you please do the following:
- Remove hats and shoes before entering the meditation room.
- Turn off cell phones, pagers, and other noise-making devices.
- Avoid placing Dharma books or prayer guides (sadhanas) on the floor.
- Stand when the Teacher enters the room.
